Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game Game Modes — Launch & Roadmap
Game modes in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game at launch and upcoming Ranked Season update. Versus, story, arcade, and training live now; ranked and spectator modes coming soon.
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game launched July 23, 2026 with strong offline and core online versus modes, but several features shown in pre-launch trailers—Ranked, Spectator, expanded Combo Trials, and guided Tutorials—are not fully available at launch. Gameplay Group acknowledged the gap in a July 23 post-launch roadmap and promised a Ranked Season update in the coming weeks. This page separates what works now from what is planned.
Available at Launch (July 23, 2026)
- Versus Mode — Offline CPU and local two-player matches with all 12 fighters
- Online Versus — Rollback netcode between PS5 and Steam; Switch-only pool on Nintendo Switch
- Story Mode — Canon single-player campaign written by Tim Hedrick
- Arcade Mode — CPU ladder progression
- Training Mode — Dummy setup, hitbox display, local practice (guide)
- Art Gallery — Franchise artwork collection
Missing or Incomplete at Launch
Community reports and developer statements confirm these modes were advertised but are not yet playable as of launch week (July 25, 2026):
- Ranked Mode — Competitive ladder matchmaking; confirmed for upcoming Ranked Season
- Spectator Mode — Watch live matches; on post-launch roadmap
- Expanded Casual Modes — Additional online casual options promised
- Combo Trials — Shown in July 20 stream previews; full rollout pending
- Tutorials & Beginner's Zone — Guided onboarding for new players coming soon

Versus Mode
Standard one-on-one fighting against CPU or local player. Supports all 12 launch fighters, support selection, and all stages. Customizable round count, timer, and health settings.
Online Versus (Live Now)
Rollback netcode online matches work between PlayStation 5 and Steam at launch. Nintendo Switch players match only against other Switch users. This is the primary online mode until Ranked Season arrives. Test support combinations here before competitive play returns.
Ranked Mode (Coming Soon)
Ranked matchmaking was a headline pre-launch feature but is absent at launch—a major source of community frustration on Steam (73% Mostly Positive, with many reviews praising combat while criticizing missing modes). Gameplay Group's July 23 roadmap confirms a Ranked Season update bringing Ranked, Spectator, and related online features in the weeks ahead.
Training Mode
Comprehensive training environment detailed in our Training Mode guide. Dummy customization, hitbox display, and two-player local practice are live. Full combo trial library and character lessons are listed on the post-launch roadmap.
Story Mode
Experience an original, canon narrative set within the Avatar universe. Story mode was outlined by series co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino and written by Tim Hedrick (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Korra). Critics note the campaign is thinner than versus content but provides lore context for the full roster.
Arcade Mode
Classic arcade-style progression against CPU opponents. Ideal for learning multiple characters from the launch roster without online pressure while Ranked is unavailable.
Art Gallery
Browse never-before-seen artwork celebrating the history of the Avatar franchise. The gallery showcases production art behind the game's 900+ hand-drawn frames per fighter.
Spectator & Lobbies (Planned)
Spectator mode and expanded custom lobbies were shown in pre-launch materials but are not available at launch. Both are confirmed on the post-launch roadmap as part of the Ranked Season update wave.
